Since I had heard this tune, Stories by Rabindranath Tagore title song by @anuraag_psychaea , I’d wanted to go to Kolkata, because I wanted to see “Tagore’s Kolkata”.
Landed first day, day started with falling in a manhole, getting lost in the city, waiting 2hrs for food in a restaurant and me and my friend were like, WE WANNA GO BACK! Where’s the Kolkata we came looking for? The Rituparno Ghosh kind, the Aparna Sen kind, the Rabi Da kind.
Fast forward to our two heavenly days in the wonderful Bhubanbari, thanks to @ashishvidyarthi1 vlogs for recommendation, I finally found the Kolkata I was looking for. I never waste time staying in hotels and am always out there exploring when in a new city, but inside Bhubanbari, I felt I was already exploring, living in the glorious days of Calcutta! I would put on my RabindraSangeet, look at the moon in the night and ….just live. Get lost. In the beauty that is Calcutta. My heart was filled. The atmosphere. The little details. Dugga Maa in every corner. A splash of art and poetry everywhere. The lovely caretaker family that lived downstairs. Drew my little scribbles on the walls before leaving, leaving a little love with Bhubanbari, while it has forever made a corner in my heart.
North Calcutta is magic! And thank you for preserving and letting us experience this magic @bhubanbari, you are truly splendid!
Had booked this place for my boyfriend’s birthday, and it was absolutely magical, just like Gaurav had assured me.
The house is so well planned and is filled with repurposed items, like I have never seen before. Kitchen shelves and tables made out of window grills, brass plates made into lampholders, wooden planks as a headrest, we were imply in awe! The attached terrace is filled with plants, most of which I was seeing for the first time, and there was not even one mosquito in the terrace or in the house despite of it being rooftop! The house is filled with secrets and wonders, which you need to visit to find out. It was beautiful to witness the sunrise from the terrace right at our doorstep. The staff was also very cooperative and fed us very tasty food. Saikat the little child of the primary caretaker of the house, won our hearts with all his stories!
It didn’t even feel like we were in kolkata, it felt like a faraway magic mystic land. “best birthday ever” my boyfriend says 🙂

Bhubanbari is an experience 🙂 It is the quintessential Kolkata experience. Time moves slower and calmer here, and you can do nothing all day, happily. The room I took was beautiful, complete with stained-glass windows. Everything was clean. All basic amenities are in place. The location is convenient for visiting all Kolkata must-dos including Jorasanko, New Market, Park St etc.
Bestest of all though, is the food at Bhubanbari – the thali the caretaker makes – you can’t get better home-cooked food in Kolkata and that’s saying quite something.
I’m glad I discovered Bhubanbari on my first trip to Kolkata, and I look forward to returning here many many times.

Room is nice, traditional style in old house in North Kolkata, great for walking to Kurmotoli and the river ghats. Has a funky, artsy vibe.

Absolutely loved our stay and we were sad when it was time to leave this gem of a stay. We loved the ambience and how artsy and hippie it felt. The bathroom was very clean. Host was very amicable and cordial.

Bhubanbari Penthouse apartment. The place is private and peaceful and the well- maintained roof garden is like a little oasis in the middle of a big city. The caretaker Mana and her son Saikat are lovely (the boy who is 9 speaks fluent English). I’ve ordered dinner every night and the food was delicious, very cheap and was delivered up to the roof. Gaurab who’s the owner but not always physically there is always available to sort things out if necessary as he’s very responsive (just send a message if necessary); if you happen to bump into him try to strike a conversation as he’s a real intellectual and a fascinating person from whom you could learn a lot about the house (where he was born) and on Kolkata. Overall, a first class place to stay in northern Kolkata – Highly recommended.

Charming heritage building in a lovely old neighborhood. You’re away from the hustle and bustle but there is still plenty to see nearby and metro is within walking distance. Nandini and Gaurav were super communicative even while out of town, and the staff at the homestay were wonderful and very helpful (did my laundry!). I stayed in a couple different rooms, both very comfortable. Recommend it highly if it looks like your vibe – pictures and description are accurate. One tip: If you do end up staying here, the best move with maps or ola/uber is to plug in ‘sunflower nursing home’ rather than the address or the homestay name.

Lovely sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. Very welcome and laid back place. Loads of space and a very comfortable stay. The location on online maps is slightly wrong and around the corner. On what three words it’s “Plays.comically.unrealistic”. Be sure to grab tea and sweets around the corner too it’s a lovely local spot with no tourists. Good communication, clean, WiFi and a hot shower. Airport taxi cost us 700 there and 300 back so gives you an idea. Lovely view across the city. Would highly recommend.

Bhuban Bari in the heart of Kolkata offers a timeless retreat, reminiscent of the city’s rich heritage. The nostalgic aesthetics transport you to a bygone era, providing a serene escape. Beyond its charming ambiance, the stay seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern comfort. every nook and corner is upcycled to your convenience, also has a story to tell. Conveniently well- connected, Bhuban Bari ensures a delightful stay, making it an unforgettable experience in the vibrant city of Kolkata There are few lines would like to say dedication bhubanbari… ‘Beyond this walls of this house and it’s beauty, there is a river of tenderness and compassion. something that makes you feel homely but at the same time makes you feel anew… It’s like the home choses you…”
Also would like to give special thanks and a shout out to the host Gaurab da… He is an amazing person, such a kind soul… If you are lucky enough you would be able to have conversations that will be cherished always.

This home is a gem in Kolkata with its pretty terrace and well equipped kitchenette. Well located, close to the metro, we have all the shops on hand. Gaurav responded to all of my questions and requests with great responsiveness and kindness. It feels like home. Thank you for your hospitality, I would recommend it 100%.
